How Apple Point-of-Sale Systems Free-Up Retail Sales Floor and Staff

Yesterday, we told you that Apple point-of-sale systems “let retailers take back both the valuable real estate previously consumed by space-hungry traditional POS systems and the sales staff required to man them.” (If you missed it, be sure to read yesterday’s post, “Black Friday Blackout? Don’t See Red. Get iPad Point-of-Sale Systems.”)

Here’s how.

Unlike outdated, bulky traditional retail POS systems, the new cloud-based Apple point-of-sale systems are:

  • Extremely fast and easy to implement and deploy;
  • Incredibly inexpensive (making them affordable to even the smallest retailers, and offering huge savings to larger retailers);
  • Easy to use;
  • Familiar to sales staff (eliminating the learning curve);
  • So intuitive they require no staff training; and
  • Completely portable.

In fact, award winning, multi-channel, multi-national fashion retailer, Aurora Fashions told ComputerWeekly that the benefits of portability, familiarity, intuitivity, and ease of use these new Apple point-of-sales systems offer are so significant, the company is completely rethinking how it trains its staff and how it uses new technology. (Find out what Aurora’s Director of Group Strategic Development, Ish Patel, had to say about each of these benefits in “iPad Point of Sale App: Huge Benefits…Zero Training…No Manual.”)

One way Aurora is using the portability and unique architecture of Apple point-of-sales systems is to “create a seamless multi-channel customer experience focused on enhancing in-store customer engagement.” (See just what Aurora is doing, in our previous blog post, “Point of Sale Tablet: Creating the Ultimate Shopping Experience, Can Also Be Used for Restaurant POS Tablet.”)

Unlike restrictive, stationary, traditional POS systems, which only let sales associates look up a limited amount of customer information at checkout, Apple point-of-sales systems:

  • Put Customer Relationship Management (CRM) at the local store level – in the hands of the sales associates involved with customer engagement and service;  and
  • Have the architecture, not only to collect and track a wealth of consumer intelligence from anywhere in the store, but to optimize and leverage it to augment and enhance customer engagement, improve the total shopping experience, and create effective, targeted, custom-tailored marketing, advertising, promotional, and sales messages.

Moreover, unlike outmoded, real estate intensive, traditional POS systems, the new cloud-based Apple point-of-sale systems:

  • Easily scale on demand;
  • Can be used anywhere in the store;
  • Enable mobile payments (reducing lines at the registers);
  • Free existing sales staff to spend more time helping customers (which, not only improves customer engagement, but increases sales); and
  • Virtually eliminate the need for old fashioned, space-hungry, fixed cash registers. (That means that, instead of shrinking the sales floor by taking up an ever-increasing amount of valuable real estate for bulky cash registers, terminals, sales counters, and aisle-space to accommodate customer lines at the register , like old-fashioned POS systems do, Apple point-of-sale systems give that space back to the store – freeing up the huge amount of expensive floor space previously required to support cost-centered register activities and enabling the retailer to reconfigure and expand store design and layout to grow the sales floor without increasing its physical footprint, by integrating the newly regained real estate space into the sales floor where it belongs and where it can be put to work making money for the store.)

Aurora Fashions, for example, is harnessing the power of new high-tech Apple point-of-sales systems to reduce “queues at the tills” and eliminate the focus on the cash register, enabling the fashion retailer to improve “store design and layout.” Patel told Fashion United that the ease and speed with which the company has been able to implement its Apple point-of-sale-system has been truly “remarkable.” (Be sure to read our previous blog post, “Aurora Launches UK’s 1st Retail iPad POS Mobile Ordering System.”)
